Seven Sins. Art between Temptation and Resistance

A sinful life is often associated with excess: losing oneself in earthly pleasures or overwhelming emotions, as well as consciously harming oneself and others. This multimedia, cross-collection exhibition reconsiders the seven deadly sins.

Hochmut

In the exhibition pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth no longer appear as violations of a divine order, but as ambivalent transgressions of social norms. Starting point is a series of etchings The Seven Deadly Sins by Pieter van der Heyden after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, engaging in a dialogue with classical modernist, post-war modernist, and contemporary art, such as works by Otto Dix, Max Ernst, Claes Oldenburg, Monica Bonvicini und Colette Lumiere. Literature, film, and recorded conversations with our local community examine the catalogue of sins from a contemporary perspective.
