From October 2017 until April 2018, four exhibitions – essays – at the Japanisches Palais illustrate and probe the phenomenon of the 20th-century avantgarde.
Instructions as a methodology, as a comment on technology and the transmissibility of information, and as a way to produce new realities, is detectable as artistic strategy in a variety of instances throughout the 20th century in Central and Eastern Europe as well as North America, bearing particular significance during the Fluxus and Conceptualist movements of the 1950s and 1960s.
The act and experience of transmission is in the center of AdA's fourth essay of SYSTEM AdA at the Archiv der Avantgarden. Instructions in the arts and in design from the Marzona collection show the radical political gesture embedded in the mechanisms of transmission, which continually test the symbolic limits of distance, participation, art, and idea as a form.
